Dash for Dylan supports kids with chronic illnesses

MENOMONEE FALLS (WITI) -- He was a teen who touched hearts. You may remember Dylan Smith, a Menomonee Falls teen diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. As we approach the one year anniversary of his death, one community is taking steps to honor him.

The beginning of the race, was the start of a movement. Family and friends wanted to have an event to help other children like 13-year-old Dylan Smith.

“Dylan suffered from muscular dystrophy and really the whole community supported him throughout his time in school.  The community has given back to him in many ways,” said, student council advisor Maggie Hangos.

His grandmother Shirley Smith said, “A couple of years ago they raised money to buy him a new wheelchair.”  Saturday morning, the Menomonee Falls student council held the first annual Dash for Dylan. He was in a wheelchair for the last 7 years, but tried not to let his condition inhibit him. “Very active, loved life, and loved being outside,” added Shirley.

Before passing, Dylan was fortunate enough to have his dream come true. Shirley said, “He was granted a wish of going on a hunt he shot his first deer.” What better way to remember him than with an outdoor event which supports one of his favorite causes, the Catch-A-Dream Foundation. “Catch-A-Dream grants kids with terminal illnesses or chronic illness to hunt fish, whatever you want to do outside,” said Shirley.

Supporters from all over attended. Cheyanne Loppnow ran in Dylan’s and her father’s honor, “My father passed away 3 years ago tomorrow and he was a big hunter and fisherman and he loved kids so he would have supported this.”

The event created an opportunity for others while paying tribute to a boy whose spirit touched many. “It’s amazing just the love and support Dylan received the help it’s given all of us to go on. It’s hard, it tough, we miss him dearly,” added Shirley.

The goal was to raise $2,500 and the group surpassed. The event raised over $3,000 for the Catch-A-Dream Foundation.
