Classes resume at South Milw. H.S. after water main break

SOUTH MILWAUKEE (WITI) — Classes at South Milwaukee High School resumed as normal on Tuesday, February 11th following a water main break Monday, February 10th.

Classes ended early on Monday, February 10th due to water issues. Some 1,200 students were dismissed shortly before 10 a.m.

Officials tell FOX6 News a water main break outside of the building meant there was no running water for toilets, sinks and bubblers at the school.

“We had a pipe that burst. We have a long pipe that provides water to our high school and a hydrant behind our middle school. And the pipe that provides the water to the hydrant actually that’s where the burst took place,” said Beth Kaminski, South Milwaukee H.S. principal.

Water was seeping into the middle school, so officials had to shut the water off.

“That ended up shutting the water off to our main high school so that we could stop the flow that was taking place in our middle school,” said Kaminski.

Kaminski said the water that got into the middle school wasn’t in an area near students. Sothey actually continued with class while the high schoolers headed home.

Despite the missed classroom hours, Kaminski says they won’t need to add any days to this year’s schedule.

A valve was expected to be replaced late Monday. It is expected students will be back in class on Tuesday. CLICK HERE for the latest information from South Milwaukee School District.
