All Wisconsin DMV centers now accept credit and debit cards

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has announced that all 73 Wisconsin DMV customer service centers are now accepting credit and debit cards as payment.

Fifteen locations around the state began accepting cards in February, 2013. DMV gradually began the accepting credit and debit cards at dozens of service centers over the following months.

"This has been in the works for a long time," said Bureau of Field Services Director Kristina Boardman. "I am very happy to announce that the option to use a debit or credit card at a DMV customer service center is available everywhere in the state."

DMV currently accepts cash, checks, most debit cards, and credit cards including MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. VISA credit cards are not being accepted, however DMV is working closely with VISA to be able to accept them in the near future.

"Customers appreciate the ability to use cash, check or credit card when paying for DMV services," said Boardman. "The use of credit and debit cards is increasing."

There is a convenience fee, based on the amount of the transaction, for using a credit or debit card. The minimum fee is 50 cents.

"We are approaching 60,000 transactions using debit or credit cards in just the first several months," notes Boardman.

All revenue taken in by the DMV goes to Wisconsin's Transportation Fund, which is used for highway and other transportation improvements.
