Achoo! Allergic to ragweed? There’s a new option that doesn’t require the needle allergy shots require

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The grass pollen season winds down over the next few weeks -- and then ragweed season starts! Some who are allergic to ragweed are preparing by trying out a new pill that is said to be an alternative to allergy shots.

The pill is called Ragwitek.

Dr. Jeffrey Wald with Kansas City Allergy and Asthma says it's purified ragweed extract.

Taking the pill helps ragweed allergy sufferers to slowly build immunity to the bad weed.

FOX6's sister station, FOX4KC WDAF in Kansas City says another pill also recently became available for timothy grass allergy sufferers.

The pill provides another option for people afraid of needles -- or those who can't find the time to come to the doctor's office for allergy shots.

FOX4KC reports the first dose of the pill must be administered in a doctor's office to ensure there's no adverse reaction -- but after that, it can be done at home.

Unfortunately, the pill isn't cheap -- and most insurers aren't paying for it yet -- even thought it has been approved by the FDA.
