17-day-old infant dies in co-sleeping death

MILWAUKEE -- 17-day-old Janelle LR Downey is the latest co-sleeping victim in the City of Milwaukee. The infant was pronounced dead on February 3rd.

The parents, Diamond and Jaquan, say they went to sleep around 10:00 p.m., but woke up around 3:00 a.m. to take care of Janelle. The father says he woke up, took Janelle from her Pack 'N Play, changed her diaper, and handed her off to his wife for feeding. Diamond told police she didn't remember receiving the infant after Jaquan changed her diaper.

Jaquan told police he found his wife laying next to Janelle in the same position he left them at around 9:00 a.m., but Janelle wasn't breathing. He says the infant had blood coming from her nose.

According to the Medical Examiner's report, Jaquan tried to give the infant some rescue breaths. The report also says the infant didn't suffer from any major medical conditions.
