Snow removed from Miller Park lots, gearing up for Opening Day
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Dump trucks, end loaders and bob cats were swarming the parking lots at Miller Park on the first day of spring, Wednesday, March 20th -- and they will be for a few days.
Poblocki Paving and Plowing has been contracted by Miller Park to clear a season's worth of snow in the parking lots. It's all in preparation for Opening Day -- and major league baseball.
"This is one of the first times they've ever had to do this," said Greg Kastenholz from Poblocki Paving. "So this is a challenge and it will be fun."
Kastenholz says his crews are operating between 40 and 50 pieces of equipment to clear the snow and move it away from the stadium. They're hauling the snow to temporary parking lots near the stadium. MMSD has also offered up some locations near Miller Park to drop the excess snow.
Poblocki Paving plans to clear all the snow in the lots by the beginning of next week -- and they're ready for any other storms that might add a fresh coat to the lots.
"There's no warm days here to melt everything...so we're here to make sure it's safe for Opening Day," said Kastenholz.
Kastenholz says right now, the biggest hazard is ice that has built up underneath the snow. Once the snow is cleared, it's extremely slippery underneath. They will be salting the lots to ensure anyone who walks there will be able to do so without falling.
