Beyond the Game: Young Milwaukee golfer beats cancer

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Late in 2011, a seemingly healthy teenager found out he had an infection on a bone in his back. While he was being treated, doctors diagnosed something far worse: cancer.

Charlie Burton plays on the University School of Milwaukee's co-ed golf team, and watching him play golf -- you'd never know how much he's been through if it weren't for the scar on his arm.

Burton was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma. It is a rare disease in which cancer cells are found in the bone or in soft tissue.

Burton went through nine months of chemo, and three months in, he had surgery to remove a tumor.

Last April, the folks at the Make-A-Wish Foundation made it possible for Burton to travel with his father to the NCAA basketball men's Final Four in Atlanta.

Now, Burton says he is happy to be back playing his favorite game: golf! He will have bone scans every three months for the next two years, but right now, his prognosis looks great.
