Two rescued from White River in Town of Lyons

WALWORTH COUNTY (WITI) -- Walworth County Sheriff's officials say two people were rescued from the water of the White River on Wednesday afternoon, June 26th.

Officials say the incident occurred just before 4:00 p.m., in the portion of the river in the Town of Lyons, between the bridges off Sheridan Springs Road.

Officials say two people were pinned up against a large log about 1/2 mile from Sheridan Springs and Short Rd.

Sheriff's officials say the current was very strong and the victims were obviously in distress.

A female had a kayak overturn on her and a male had a canoe overturn on him while trying to rescue the female.

The female's kayak had overturned and was swept down river.

The man, identified as 48-year-old Jim McKay of Lake Villa, IL had come across the woman, identified as 29-year-old Adriane Granlund of Elkhorn.

Officials say Granlund showed signs of distress and early onset hypothermia.

Granlund was kayaking with three friends, identified as 24-year-old Kyra Brown of Elkhorn, 29-year-old Catherine Choyce of Elkhorn and 28-year-old Shiloh Graske of Delavan.

McKay attempted to free the woman from the log, but his canoe became swamped and he became the second victim, now pinned against this same log.

Walworth County Deputies were able to give instructions to those in the water.

Using throw ropes and flotation devices, eventually deputies were able to pull all persons from the river.

The female victim who was pinned against the log was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Her current status is unknown.

The other females and the male canoe operator were checked out on the shoreline and released.
