Students sent home for not having up-to-date immunizatinos

KENOSHA (WITI) -- Dozens of students in Kenosha Unified School District had to stay home on Tuesday, February 4th -- because they're not up to date on state-mandated immunizations. The families were warned several times -- and now students are missing class because of it.

Every year, school districts around Wisconsin have to remind families their children need to get immunized. The Kenosha Unified School District has a dwindling list of students yet to get them.

"190 warning letters on January 24th and then 130 notices went home last Friday," said Sue Valeri from Kenosha Unified.

The letters informed parents that if they had not complied by Monday, February 3rd, their child would have to stay home.

As of Tuesday, 69 students in the Kenosha district had to stay home. After this week, the remaining families are referred to the district attorney's office.

State law allows families to opt out of shots for religious and medical reasons.
