State Department of Natural Resources urges leaf composting, mulching

MADISON (AP) — The state Department of Natural Resources is urging homeowners to compost or mulch fallen leaves to keep them out of landfills and reduce burning piles.

DNR officials say composting means more room and landfill and less chance of errant sparks from burning piles starting wildfires. Fewer burning piles also helps maintain air quality.

The agency says spreading composted leaves or mulching them in place by mowing can provide lawns with essential nutrients such as carbon, phosphorus and potassium.
