Racine County theater shows sex trafficking film to help spread awareness
RACINE COUNTY (WITI) -- A movie was shown in Racine County with a plot line that discusses a problem that exists in communities both big and small in Wisconsin -- the dark business of human trafficking.
On Saturday, February 28th, the film "8 Days" was shown at the Golden Rondelle Theater in downtown Racine for free.
The film "8 Days" is inspired by actual events as the director's sister was trafficked for 6 years.
"What we're trying to do with the movie is raise awareness in the community and also educate people that human trafficking exists both in large and small cities across the state and across the nation. I think up until now, a lot of people think of human trafficking victims as just prostitutes, and it's really much more than that. These women don't have the luxury of making choices for themselves. They're really under the control of someone else," said Karri Hemming, Racine Coalition Against Human Trafficking.
Officials from the Racine Police Department and Racine Coalition Against Human Trafficking held a question and answer session after today's showings.
