A family member of one survivor spoke out as 19-year-old Zhakie Riley recovers in the hospital. His mother, Michelle Riley, said she is counting her blessings that her son is alive after being shot. She shared photos of him inside the hospital. She said he was shot yesterday morning near 24th Place and Melvina. Milwaukee police responded to the area around 5:30 in the morning.
Riley said her son had to undergo surgery and will be in the hospital until he can eat solid foods. While getting the call her son had been shot was earth-shattering, she is now just grateful he is on the road to recovery.
What they're saying:
"Wheew… thank you, Jesus, I’m so grateful. I’m so grateful that my son is still here because, like I said, I lost one almost 4 years ago to the car accident," Michelle Riley said. "I don’t think as a person, let alone as a mother, that I could survive physically, mentally, emotionally of losing another child."
City representatives pointed to the latest crime data showing that, despite the violence, crime is trending down. The latest data shows homicides are down 25% compared to this same timeframe last year. As for non-fatal shootings, there have been 273 so far this year compared to 364, which is a 25% decrease.
