Milwaukee apartment arson displaces 9 families

Firefighters on Tuesday morning, Nov. 22 responded to the scene of an apartment fire near 38th and Lisbon in Milwaukee.

Firefighters on Tuesday morning, Nov. 22 responded to the scene of an apartment fire near 38th and Lisbon in Milwaukee. Milwaukee police are investigating the fire as an arson. 

"I was in the bed and I got up, and I thought it was a fire or something outside," said Davis Garner, who said all he smelled was smoke. "All I know is a big blaze shooting up out of there. And I was telling everybody you got to get out of the building."

FOX6 News crews on scene saw significant damage to a third story window. 

Jeanette Jackson-Wallace, a resident of the apartment building says the apartment that started on fire was empty, the previous tenant moved out recently.

"My apartment is destroyed, no salvaging. This is all I own right here. This is my whole life right here, this bag," said Jeanette Jackson-Wallace, resident.

Police say the suspect intentionally started a unit in an apartment building on fire. No injuries were reported. 

Just days before Thanksgiving, Jackson-Wallace said she is just thankful everyone got out safely.

"I just thank God that I'm alive and that everybody in the building was safe because one thing about it, we're still breathing -- so we can figure out the rest," Jackson-Wallace said.

38th and Lisbon apartment fire, Milwaukee

The Red Cross says there are 11 apartments in the building, two were not occupied. Nine families have been displaced.

No arrests have been made.
