London's Kenwood House collection visits Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee Art Museum is hosting an exhibition of 48 masterpieces, many of which have rarely been seen outside of London.

Milwaukee is the only Midwest city hosting "Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London.''

The pieces are usually at Kenwood House in London but the neoclassical villa is undergoing renovations.

Museum officials say the works are the finest examples of 17th and 18th century British, Dutch and Flemmih portraiture and landscapes.

One particularly notable work is a Rembrandt self-portrait called "Portrait of the Artist'' from about 1665 - one of his last self-portraits.

The exhibition runs through Jan. 13. It was previously in Houston and after Milwaukee it goes to Seattle and Little Rock, Ark.
