Lawmakers move to designate kringle as official state pastry

MADISON (WITI) -- Early Wednesday morning, lawmakers worked through a long Joint Finance Committee session -- finalizing budget items like BadgerCare, school vouchers and taxes. Another item on the list was moving to designate kringle as the official state pastry.

The provision was tacked on by Rep. Cory Mason (D - Racine).

The Danish pastry has strong ties to Racine, which has a large Danish population.

Other Wisconsin pastries include the cream puff, popular at the annual Wisconsin State Fair.

Mason said the cream puff has been considered for designation as the official state dessert. He said he has been thinking of designating the kringle the official state pastry since he was elected in 2006, and the “999” motion at the end of the Joint Finance Committee session seemed like a good opportunity.
