Lake Drive construction in Milwaukee County; what to know

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced construction on a stretch of Lake Drive in Milwaukee County will begin next week. Here's what to know about the project.

Once work begins, Lake Drive will be closed to through traffic from Edgewood Avenue to Kensington Boulevard in Shorewood. A single lane will remain open for local access only.

Drivers are encouraged to use North Avenue, Oakland Avenue and Hampton Road to get around the closure. Anyone looking to access Lincoln Memorial Drive is encouraged to use Kenwood Boulevard, Oakland Avenue and Hampton Road.

Brown Deer shopping center development makes progress

There is a buzz in Brown Deer as the village approved signage for a multi-million dollar development.

Pedestrian access will be maintained on one side of Lake Drive during construction, WisDOT said. 

The closure is scheduled for completion in late fall 2025. WisDOT said the timeline is weather dependent and subject to change.

WisDOT said improvements to Lake Drive include:

  • Replace existing pavement within project limits
  • Install new traffic signals at the Lake Drive and Capitol Drive intersection
  • Curb extensions at multiple intersections for improved pedestrian safety
  • Addition of on-street bike lane
  • Replace water mains and combined sewer lines
  • New sidewalks
  • Improve curb ramps to meet ADA standards
  • New concrete curb and gutter
  • New pavement markings

The backstory:

Gov. Tony Evers approved the $9.88 million Lake Drive project, WisDOT said. Zignego Company, Inc. is the project's primary contractor.
