The Wisconsin Humane Society seized animals over the weekend after they were potentially exposed to the cold.

What we know:

It took in three dogs and three cats from a home in Silver Lake. The dogs range from 1 to 4 years old, and the cats were less than a year old.

What they're saying:

Wisconsin Humane Society Vice President of Marketing & Communications Angela Speed said they are still doing medical evaluations.

Because the case is an open investigation, she can't share much, but she said it's a good reminder for pet owners to keep their time outside to a minimum.

"Without knowing what exactly the temperature was in that garage, it’s hard to say how unsafe it was," Speed said. "But when we do have really cold weather like this that’s frigid, heated shelter for animals is important to avoid hypothermia and frostbite."

Speed said dogs and cats are most susceptible to frostbite in the tips of their ears, tail and paw pads.

"When the temperatures are this bitter cold, we really have to keep an eye out for our pets," she said.

What you can do:

If you think your pet has frostbite, call your vet.
