Greendale students mark Wisconsin's statehood day

GREENDALE (WITI) -- Wednesday, May 29th marks a very special day in Wisconsin history. On this day in 1848, Wisconsin became the 30th state in the union.

To celebrate the occasion, fourth graders at St. Alphonsus School in Greendale took a step back in time. Students and staff participated in what they call Pioneer Day.

Everything from the lunch they ate to the clothes they wore, reflected the way it was in the 1840s.

Teachers say they even taught class the same way teachers did in 1848.

"It's been more difficult for me because I use the smartboard and I use the computer and for me to turn that all off today has been difficult," said Mary Duckert.

St. Alphonsus has been celebrating Pioneer Day for 18 years.
