1 dead, child hospitalized in Raymond house fire

One person died and a child was hospitalized after a house fire on Monday, Dec. 1, in the Village of Raymond, with multiple fire departments responding and the cause under investigation.

What we know:

Firefighters and law enforcement were called to the scene in Racine County around 2:50 p.m., where multiple fire engines and police squads blocked off 108th Street. The area has a Franksville mailing address but is located within the Village of Raymond.

The Raymond Fire & Rescue Department said a Raymond fire chief and a Norway police officer were the first to arrive and attempted a rescue but were forced to back out due to heavy smoke. A Racine County sheriff’s deputy made a second rescue attempt and was able to remove a child from the home.

Firefighters then made rapid entry, searched the residence and located a second victim, the woman. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The child was transported to Children’s Wisconsin. Their condition has not been released.

Officials said the fire was quickly extinguished, and crews conducted overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully out.

The Racine County Fire Investigation Task Force and the Racine County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.
