DOJ settles lawsuit over Fair Housing Act with city of New Berlin

NEW BERLIN -- The Department of Justice settled its lawsuit with the city of New Berlin.

The federal government was suing for race discrimination as a violation of the Fair Housing Act.

New Berlin was considering a 180-unit housing project. The City Planning Commission approved the deal, but then reversed the decision after people objected to it.

The lawsuit alleged the objections were based on racial stereotypes.

Wednesday, April 11th's settlement means the city cannot delay the current project, and must do a series of different things to provide other affordable housing projects in the future.
