Contact 6 investigates "We Tour America"

MILWAUKEE -- Winning a vacation sounds like a dream come true, but FOX6's Contact 6 warns that it could turn into a nightmare if you don't read the fine print before you sign on the dotted line!

New mom, Jean Westerhaus won a vacation offered by a company called "We Tour America," which says it provides highly-discounted vacation packages to people who sign up for one. "I got a phone call from some guy who said 'you won a Disney vacation!' He kept saying 'Get excited about this! You guys should be getting excited about this! Why aren't you excited about this?' My first inclination was 'what's the catch?'" Westerhaus said.

The only real catch is on page three of the company's contract, saying Westerhaus would be required to take a 90-minute guided tour of the property because, as it says on the bottom of the page, the company is selling timeshares.

Westerhaus wasn't too worried. "I'm fine with going to some presentation and saying 'no, sorry, I'm not interested,' and then taking advantage of this highly-discounted vacation. I'm like, 'that's okay,'" Westerhaus said.

However, Westerhaus had second thoughts after doing some research online. "There was a lot of stuff about these timeshare tours running over - like three or four hours over what they should be. At that point, I was like, okay, this isn't going to work with a family," Westerhaus said.

Westerhaus also saw a statement in the contract that vacation packages aren't sold on a cancellation basis. Concerned she just made a $500 mistake, she emailed Contact 6. Contact 6's Katrina Cravy found the company has a C+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and found a second, similar recent complaint against the company in Contact 6's files.

Contact 6's Katrina Cravy told "We Tour America" about both complaints. "When Contact 6 contacted the company, then they apparently offered a free trip and said 'they can come down and see that we are a legitimate company,'" Westerhaus said.

The company gave complete refunds and free trips to both customers, but added the company gets its fair share of negative posts online, and that humans tend to focus more on the negative, not the positive.

Contact 6 advises to remember to research a company before you sign a contract or give out your credit card number, and always get cancellation policies in writing. Also, never give in to high-pressure sales tactics. Make sure you find the best deal for you and your family on your terms.
