County Board moves forward with new airport pickup fees for Uber, Lyft, cabs

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee County Board on Thursday, July 28th moved forward with new airport pickup fees for taxicabs and ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft.Beginning September 1st, each Uber and Lyft driver will be required to pay a $125 annual permitting fee.

Pavement buckled: Lanes have reopened on northbound US 41/45 near Good Hope Rd.

MILWAUKEE -- The two right lanes of northbound US 41/45 -- were shut down for hours near Good Hope Road Wednesday, July 27th due to buckling in the pavement.According to Greg Heisel, highway maintenance manager for Milwaukee County, around 11:30 a.m., the Highway Department was made aware of the buckling.Upon arrival, crews found the whole 10' long by 12' wide slab of concrete was buckled and had to begin the process of using saws to cut out the concrete.Around 1:30 p.m., they removed the last of the concrete and were working to fill the space with eight to 10 tons of hot asphalt.During the concrete removal process and pouring of the asphalt, lanes two and three were closed.Once the asphalt was in place, lane two reopened.Lane three remains closed so the asphalt can cool and set.The lanes reopened shortly before 5 p.m.This is the first instance of road buckling in Milwaukee County this year.

Milwaukee Business Journal: New international terminal at Mitchell could cost up to $122M

Fire department training held at Mitchell International Airport Tuesday

MILWAUKEE -- If you noticed a black plume of smoke rising near Mitchell International Airport on Tuesday morning, July 26th -- it was just emergency crews in training.Around 9:30 a.m., the fire department at the airport began conducting training which included a simulated fire emergency.

"System outage:" Hundreds of Southwest flights delayed after ground stop due to technical issues

DALLAS, Texas -- Hundreds of Southwest flights were delayed Wednesday after the airline was hit with technical issues.The trouble started when a "system outage" led to a nationwide ground stop for all Southwest flights that lasted for just over an hour.The company said in a statement that an early-afternoon outage impacted "multiple technology systems." After the ground stop was lifted, flights were left flights backlogged."We expect to continue our move toward a normal operation, but believe it will take time," Southwest said in a statement.

WisDOT: Hot weather this week increases chances for pavement buckling

MILWAUKEE -- With substantially hot and humid weather conditions on the way, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is reminding motorists of the potential for pavement buckling.According to a press release from the DOT, hot temperatures cause pavement to expand, and where there are expansion joints, the slabs of pavement push against each other.
