Gov. Walker declares April 7-11 "Work Zone Awareness Week"

MADISON (WITI) -- To help prevent traffic crashes in road construction and maintenance work zones that injure and kill motorists and workers, Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed the week of April 7 to 11 as Work Zone Awareness Week in Wisconsin.Governor Walker’s proclamation notes that “work zones may consist of short-term, localized projects involving local maintenance crews or utility workers or large highway reconstruction projects lasting months or years.”The proclamation also reminds drivers that “work zones often require narrowed lanes, lane shifts, temporary pavements, reduced speeds and night work” and advises that “driving through work zones requires motorists’ utmost attention.”Last year, there were nearly 1,600 work zone crashes in Wisconsin that caused nine deaths and 624 injuries, according to preliminary statistics from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).“Driving through a work zone is challenging under the best of circumstances, but your reaction time and margin for error are reduced significantly if you speed, tailgate or don’t pay attention to rapidly changing traffic situations.

Wisconsin Senate passes bill restricting drones

MADISON (AP) — The use of unmanned drones for surveillance would be restricted under a bill that has passed the Wisconsin state Senate.The bipartisan measure approved Tuesday on a voice vote would outlaw deploying a drone capable of making video or audio recordings in areas where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy.It also would require police to obtain warrants before using drones to collect evidence except in emergency situations.

$9 million safety project planned for Mitchell International Airport

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Governor Scott Walker has announced a $9,240,135 project that includes several safety-related improvements and planning updates at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee.Wendy Hottenstein, airport project manager with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), said the project involves construction of a secured perimeter roadway system around the airfield.This will allow airport support vehicles to access all areas of the airfield without having to cross open runways and taxiways or travel on public roads.Portions of the existing six foot perimeter fencing will also be replaced with 10 foot fencing to provide additional security.Pavement rehabilitation and electrical upgrades are also part of this airfield safety improvement project.
