UFC Hometown Throwdown pits Henderson vs Pettis
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The champ versus the hometown hero: UFC 164 is billed as the Harley-Davidson "Hometown Throwdown."
It was the roundhouse kick heard round the world of mixed martial arts: The moment Milwaukee's "Showtime" Anthony Pettis delivered it to the face of "Smooth" Benson Henderson during his December 2010 victory in the World Extreme Cagefighting Match, two things happened.
Pettis took Henderson's lightweight belt in his hometown of Phoenix, and Henderson had to live with that "Pettis stain on my soul." Secondly -- a video that has been viewed millions of times on YouTube.
Soon after the match, the Ultimate Fighting Championship absorbed the WEC, (World Extreme Cagefighting). Henderson, unbeaten in his last seven fights, became its lightweight champion.
He was supposed to fight T.J. Grant as part of Harley-Davidson's 110th anniversary celebration this Saturday night in the BMO Harris Bradley Center, but Grant suffered a concussion, and Pettis himself had to bow out of a featherweight title match in Brazil after tweaking a knee in June.
So, the stars aligned for Henderson-Pettis round two: The UFC Harley-Davidson Hometown Throwdown. This time, it's on "Showtime's" home turf.
The 26-year-old Pettis' first win over the 29-year-old Henderson was memorable. Saturday night would be the ultimate.
Henderson-Pettis, a prime, pay-per-view event is scheduled to start around 9:00 p.m. Milwaukee time.
