New sod rolled out at Miller Park

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Each season, a lot goes into preparing the field at Miller Park. Some years however are more intense than others and this year is one of them.

About every five years, crews completely tear up the old turf, and begin to lay new sod.

"Last time this was done was in 2008,” explained Justin Scott, the Director of Ground at Miller Park. “It really just helps keep the playing field fresh. It's really just an industry standard that all MLB teams do every now and then.”

Scott says there are about seven Brewer employees who have been working on the renovations, along with close to 20 contractors.

On Wednesday, the workers laid the sod, but that is just part of it. Their work started September 30th, with taking out about 3 ½ inches of the old turf, then smoothing the surface and filling it in with 1,000 tons of sand.

‘It is a lot of work; it's a long procedure to make everything happen. But the guys take a lot of pride in what they do. everyone wants to see a great outcome,” said Scott, “There`s a lot of things that go into it. Things really have to perfect at this level. “

But Scott said when that finally happens, it’s a proud moment for everyone that worked on it.

“It's a great feeling once everything is said and done and once everything is put together,” said Scott.

The plan is to have it done by Friday. Crews will then continue to maintain it until next season.
