Waukesha family mourning loss of two after serious weekend crash
WAUKESHA COUNTY (WITI) -- A Waukesha County family is dealing with the loss of two family members, killed in a crash near Nashotah on Sunday, September 8th. This family is also dealing with the pain they caused to a New Berlin family. An adult man and two young children were seriously injured in the crash.
Investigators in Waukesha County are working on an official report as to why Glenda Skalecki's black Nissan swerved first to the right, bounced up from a ditch, and crossed Highway 16 eastbound near Highway C, before crossing over the median and crashing head-on into an oncoming silver Toyota.
51-year-old Skalecki of Oconomowc was killed, as was her passenger, her 71-year-old mother, Karen Gulley of West Bend.
"We're really concerned for the other family," Skalecki's daughter, Courtney told FOX6 News.
Skalecki's daughter says her mother had a pacemaker surgically implanted just two months ago. She had medical problems, but was not restricted in driving.
"Her heart would slow down a lot and her pacemaker was to kick it back into gear, but there would be times she would pass out and not remember until she would wake up a minute later. We're thinking maybe that's what happened behind the wheel," Courtney told FOX6 News.
When she was in better health, Skalecki worked as a nursing assistant in a nursing home. Gulley was devoted to taking care of her son, who battles multiple sclerosis.
"They were both really really amazing people. They helped people so much, give the shirts off their backs if they could," Courtney said.
Church was part of Skalecki's life every Sunday. It is where she was driving from this past Sunday. The thought of the injured family haunts Courtney Skalecki as she grieves her own losses.
"We'd like to apologize so much, so much that would you have to go through this. We just hope and pray you guys don't lose anybody," Courtney said.
Glenda Skalecki was also just recently diagnosed with stomach cancer. Her family is working on a fund to pay her funeral expenses.
The Medical Examiner's Office is still working on autopsy results to see if Courtney's concerns about how this accident happened are verified.
A fund has been created to help the Skalecki family pay for funeral expenses. You can contribute to the Skalecki Donation Fund at any Chase Bank.
