RACINE -- The city of Racine sold two 21-year-old trolleys at auction Wednesday, May 16th.
The trolleys had reached the end of their useful life as public passenger vehicles -- and the city could no longer afford to keep them in service.
Racine officials hoped to get between $50,000 and $70,000 for each of the trolleys. One vehicle was sold for $23,100 and the second vehicle with associated spare parts was sold for $27,100. Racine originally paid $290,000 for the trolleys.
Jay Price Ruff helped the Racine Area Visitors Bureau raise one-fifth of the total, or $58,000, to qualify for a federal grant. She says it’s sad that the trolleys never generated as much interest as hoped.
