MADISON (WITI) -- FOX6 News has learned two subjects have been detained following reports of shots fired near UW-Madison on Wednesday evening, September 18th. The subjects detained are males, ages 17 and 18, according to Madison police. This, following an armed robbery near campus.

The initial incident reportedly occurred around 6:30 p.m.

FOX6 News has learned the shots fired incident happened in the 100 block of Langdon Street, which is about a block away from campus, and is the location of several fraternity and sorority houses and other student housing. This area is known as "Fraternity Row."

FOX6 News has learned from Madison police that this was an armed robbery attempt. Police say two suspects attempted to rob a 19-year-old male victim before a chase ensued, and the suspect fired at least one round. No one was injured.

Police say the victim was robbed of his backpack, wallet and keys on W. Gilman Street just before 6:30 p.m.

Detectives believe a friend or friends of the victim gave chase, as the two suspects fled the area on foot.

The pursuit occurred on Langdon Street.

Officials eventually detained one suspect at a bus stop on Observatory Drive and a second suspect near the intersection of Gilman Street and Henry Street.

UW-Madison on Wednesday evening, September 18th urged its students to remain indoors. Students reportedly received a mass text from university officials on Wednesday evening.

Via Twitter, UW-Madison police said Wednesday evening: "UW-Madison Police is responding to reports of shots fired on Langdon Street, with suspect heading down lake path toward Lakeshore. UW-Madison police advising all to stay in place and indoors."

UW-Madison police later said on Twitter: "Police continue to search west of Memorial Union along lake path for Langdon Street shots fired suspect." This, just before 8:00 p.m.

Just before 9:00 p.m., FOX6 News learned two subjects had been detained.

Police were also said to be searching the area of the nearby Madison College Wednesday evening. A witness told police a suspect may have been in a building there, but the building was searched and the suspect was not found.

UW-Madison had an alert on its website, saying:

"6:45 p.m. UWPD is responding to a report of shots fired at 130 Langdon Street. The suspect was last seen heading west on Lakeshore path in the direction of the Lakeshore residence halls. All are asked to shelter in place and stay indoors until the situation is resolved.

Suspect description: A black male wearing black clothing with a black/white baseball cap, black jacket, dark backpack.
