Trevor-Wilmot school closed Friday due to student illness
KENOSHA CO. (WITI) -- School officials canceled class at Trevor-Wilmot K-8 on Friday, November 8th after a mysterious illness sent dozens of students home sick the day before.
Health aide Lynn Murdock spent Thursday looking over several ill students who made their way into her office.
"We noticed that the majority of the kids were calling in with a lot of vomiting, some had diarrhea, some just weren't feeling well," said Murdock.
Murdock keeps a daily log of child ailments and says that's how she knew something needed to be done.
"As I was going through the checklist I noticed that we were going on the fourth page and I'm like this is something that I think we need to address with the administration. Doing this for the last couple years, I've never seen that many kids at one time have this," said Murdock.
Cleaning crews are working to disinfect the school, scrubbing down every inch of almost every surface in the hopes of preventing any more sickness.
"Places that kids touch, door handles, paper towel dispensers, computer keyboards," said District Administrator Dr. George Steffen. "We felt like we needed to have a day to try and nip this thing in the bud."
Officials still don't know what caused so many students to become sick. The health department says they haven't found any evidence of a food borne illness.
Parents of sick children are being provided kits to collect samples in order to run tests and determine a possible cause.
