Suspect arrested in Milwaukee corner market robbery

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police arrested a suspect believed to be responsible for the December 14th armed robbery at a corner market near Muskego and Becher on the city's south side.

The 35-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested after MPD received a tip from someone who saw the surveillance video that was released to the media on Wednesday, January 9th.

The suspect entered the San Ignacio Market around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 14th. He went to the counter to purchase a soda.

"I didn't really pay much attention. Then, he got up and set the soda on the counter. Next thing I know, he'd brought out his knife and grabbed the register," Ernestine Aldana said.

When the register was opened, the suspect pulled a knife and ripped the till from the register. Aldana then pulled a gun on the suspect and the suspect dropped the till on the way out. The suspect did not get any money.

Aldana told FOX6 News she barely remembers anything after she saw the knife and pulled out a gun. However, the video shows how she aggressively defended her store.

"I just remember grabbing the gun and pointed it at his head. He was running and I took off after him outside," Aldana said.

Aldana said she and her husband, who both own the store got the gun for safety and practiced at the shooting range a few times. However, Aldana said this is the first time in their two-and-a-half years of being open they've ever had a problem.

"If I would have fired it would have been a head shot, so I couldn't do it. I would have killed him if I had, so I couldn't," Aldana said.

The case will be reviewed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the coming days.
