"Stop and live:" Groups take over busy intersections in Milwaukee to promote safe driving

MILWAUKEE -- A group of people took over several busy intersections in Milwaukee Saturday morning, hoping to catch the attention of drivers in hopes of sending them a message.

Honks of support reinforce the message being chanted. Being proactive, folks from the Grasslyn Manor, Dineen Park, and Sherman Park Community Association, took over intersections along Fond du Lac Avenue and Capitol Drive picketing against reckless driving.

"Stop and live. So many people run our lights," said Steve O'Connell, Grasslyn Manor.

Toting creative signs aimed to bring attention to the issue.

"Fast. Driving way too fast, texting while driving, children that are being disruptive and not in the proper car seats -- there are a lot of accidents because they're not paying attention their driving," said Michelle Baldwin, lives and works in area.

Not only should you do your part while behind the wheel, but if you see something say something. Police urge you to contact them if you see a disobedient motorist.

"Give them a license plate number and they will follow up with it if they can," said O'Connell.

MPD is helping combat the issue by reactivating the traffic enforcement division thanks to a $100,000 grant 50 motorcycle cops will be patrolling the area.

"Start slowing people down, start issuing tickets to people passing on the right, to get that stopped," said O'Connell.

Law enforcement and residents uniting to reduce accidents and save lives.

"These are neighbors getting involved. This is citizen action," said O'Connell.

The group is planning several more demonstrations, including during afternoon rush hour.
