Dozens of animals adopted from Caledonia shelter
RACINE (WITI) -- Many of the dogs and cats seized from the Orphan Kanines facility in Caledonia last month went up for adoption on Wednesday, June 18th. 62 dogs and eight cats were ready to go home on Wednesday -- after receiving three weeks of care with the Wisconsin Humane Society. These animals were met by a long line of pet lovers hoping to adopt them!
The Wisconsin Humane Society held an adoption event from noon until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the temporary Racine facility that is housing the animals seized from the Orphan Kanines shelter.
The facility is located on Durand Avenue in Racine.
Posters of the available pets were plastered on the windows of the facility, and a crowd of anxious adopters waited in line to get the dog or cat they came for.
The Wisconsin Humane Society took in a total of 80 dogs from Orphan Kanines.
Orphan Kanines' owner, Debra Gray, has been charged with 85 misdemeanor counts of mistreating animals, and one count of operating as a dog breeder or dealer without a license.
Conditions found inside the Orphan Kanines facility were reported to be "deplorable" -- and unfit for both humans and animals alike.
Now, the Wisconsin Humane Society has announced the first Orphan Kanines dog has found its "furever" home.
The Wisconsin Humane Society says "Patsy's" new parents waited in their car for 12 hours to make sure they were first in line to meet her!
"As soon as they posted the picture, I fell in love with little Patsy! I just wanted to have the first pick, basically, and I thought with how cute she is, she's going to go very fast, so I better get down there!" Rebecca Beardsley said.
Beardsley drove to Racine from Slinger -- and arrived at the facility at midnight.
During their introduction, the Wisconsin Humane Society says Patsy made a beeline straight for her new parents -- and jumped into Dad's lap!
The Wisconsin Humane Society says: "The joy shared between all three was the perfect way to kick off the day!
Beardsley wasn't the only one who showed up Wednesday with her heart already set on one specific pup!
"I'm here for Abby," Andrew Vlosich said.
Vlosich, and his son, Kyle showed up hoping to find a new best friend. Their family dog died several years ago.
"We we had a Shetland Sheepdog mix named Shelly that died after she was 14 years old -- and Abby looks like identical to her," Vlosich said.
Abby -- initially standoff-ish, was within minutes, happily greeting her new family.
The Wisconsin Humane Society tells FOX6 News 64 of the 70 animals made available on Wednesday for adoption have found homes.
That's 60 dog adoptions and four cat adoptions.
The two dogs will be available at the Wisconsin Humane Society's Milwaukee campus on Thursday. The four cats will be available at the Wisconsin Humane Society's Racine campus on Thursday.
The Wisconsin Humane Society says its staff members met with 200 families on Wednesday.
