Sagging electrical wire creates traffic mess at Zoo Interchange

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Westbound I-94 was temporarily shut down on Wednesday afternoon, September 25th at the Zoo Interchange due to an issue with an electrical wire.

Officials with American Transmission company say an equipment failure at the interchange construction site caused the line to sag. A reel conductor, a mechanical device, that brings the line up onto a power pole malfunctioned. However, the wire that fell was not live.

There was a Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputy on site when the failure happened. So the highway was closed quickly.

Two vehicles were damaged as a result of this incident. The wire came into contact with the top of two passing cars.  Nobody was hurt.

Westbound I-94 was shut down for about ten to 15 minutes. The area where the work is taking place is part of the Zoo Interchange project that will be going on until January 2015.
