Racine Zoo giraffe dies; suffers fall in holding area, unable to stand again

Racine Zoo is saddened to report the death of, Jabari, the Masai Giraffe. Jabari arrived at the Racine Zoo in October 2017.

What we know:

On Thursday morning, zoo staff began working with specialist veterinarians and Animal Care Specialists across Wisconsin to care for other zoo residents. While onsite, Jabari suffered a fall in his holding area and was unable to lift himself to stand again. 

More than 50 animal care specialists from across Wisconsin worked into the late evening, and made every effort to return Jabari to standing, but were unsuccessful.

"We would like to thank the Milwaukee County Zoo, Racine Fire Department, Milwaukee Fire Department, University of Wisconsin’s School of Veterinary Medicine, Magnolia Springs Vet Clinic and the many other veterinarians and clinics who responded with a quick and heroic effort," said the Racine Zoo.

The Racine Zoo will be closed to the public on Friday, Jan. 17 to allow staff to grieve this loss and care for the zoo’s many residents.
