Racine's Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department announced on Friday, Jan. 17 that it will ensure that four of city's community centers are open to serve as warming centers on Monday, Jan. 20.

Bitter cold preparation

What we know:

Due to the federal holiday on Monday (MLK Day), all Racine buildings were originally scheduled to be closed to the public. That has changed as a result of the bitter cold temperatures in the forecast.

Four community centers will be open on Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be no regular activities; the centers will only serve as warming centers for those needing to escape the cold temperatures.

What you can do:

All residents are encouraged to take steps to ensure everyone remains safe during this cold weather:

  • Time spent outdoors should be limited as much as possible.
  • Wearing multiple layers of loose-fitting clothes is more effective than a single heavy layer.
  • Any non-essential travel should be postponed, and vehicles should be prepared.
  • Older adults, young children, and those who are sick are affected more quickly by cold weather. Check in with elderly family members, friends, and neighbors.
  • Do not leave pets outdoors for longer than necessary.
