RACINE -- Racine police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man. Family members say the victim is Xavier Cooper.

Authorities say at approximately 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night, July 4th, officers were dispatched to 12th Street and Grand Avenue for a man who had been shot.

Cooper sustained one gun shot wound and was transported to Wheaton Franciscan - All Saints Emergency Room, where he later died from his injuries.

A neighbor of Cooper's tells FOX6 News the bullet that hit Cooper was not intended for him. He says Cooper was trying to break up a fight between two men. One man was hitting another with a gun -- and it went off.

Officers went door-to-door Thursday morning interviewing neighbors and witnesses to learn more about what happened.

Neighbors called it a senseless act of violence. There is now a memorial set up at the site of the shooting for Cooper.

"I never thought someone would get murdered here. This is the Fourth of July. Can't we all just get along?" one neighbor said.

Cooper's family says they're devastated by the incident, but are confident the person(s) responsible will come forward.

Racine police are urging anyone with information to contact the Racine Police Department at (262) 635-7700 and ask for the Investigations Unit, or call Crimestoppers at (262) 636-9330.
