Repairing hail damage in Elkhorn
Repairing hail damage in Elkhorn
ELKHORN (WITI) -- Strong storms moved across southeastern Wisconsin on Monday, May 12th -- and left downed trees and flooding in their wake. But for some, that wasn't the only problem! Hail caused major damage to homes in some areas -- including Elkhorn.
Many homeowners in Elkhorn are dealing with hail damage after Monday's storms. It's unfortunate for the homeowners, but it means big business for roofing companies who are being called upon to make repairs.
"We were just being peppered like 'bang, bang, bang,'" Ellie Price said.
As Price took cover during Monday's thunderstorms, hail hammered her home.
"The ice just came and it just poured and pounded and just beat on the roof -- beat on the siding. It was just loud! Just loud," Price said.
When the storms moved out, Price went out to survey the damage.
"I looked around the house and saw a couple of little dings and loose shingles so I knew we had a little bit of damage. I checked my flowers and the hail just knocked them off," Price said.
Price initially thought the damage was minimal, but...Bo Duggan with America's Best Remodeling assessed the damage and brought the bad news.
"These are tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage," Duggan said.
Duggan and his crew on Tuesday used chalk to highlight the problem areas.
His team is among several in Elkhorn helping homeowners deal with the damage.
"You see the busted siding. Then you see the gutter damage. Full replacement would be my expectation on about 99% of roofs here. We were out putting tarps on roofs that had a lot of shingles missing," Duggan said.
Because of quarter and golf ball sized, jagged hail, Price's roof will have to be fully replaced. However, she believes it's a small price to pay in comparison to damage others in the area are facing.
"People have homes maybe they cant get into, have water damage from water coming in, so we`re thankful," Price said.
Duggan says he had 10 appointments scheduled for Tuesday -- and 10 for Wednesday -- which shows the extent of the damage.
Duggan says the damage isn't always visible to the homeowner -- saying about 60% of the homeowners he has been in contact with didn't know how severe the problem was.
Duggan says if the problem isn't taken care of, homeowners could face other problems down the road -- including leaking roofs or water seeping into the home.
Duggan says it's very important to find a reputable company to do the job!
