Oshkosh police shooting at Fleet Farm; armed subject shot, later died

OSHKOSH, Wis. - The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating a fatal police shooting that occurred in the City of Oshkosh on Sunday morning, May. 10.

What we know:
DOJ officials said at about 8:15 a.m., Oshkosh police were dispatched to the Fleet Farm on Washburn Street (near Witzel and I-41) for a report of a theft of a firearm.
Once on the scene, a police officer encountered a subject in the parking lot of a business. Not complying with commands, the subject continued walking towards the law enforcement officer and the subject retrieved a firearm from his waistline. The officer discharged their service weapon, striking the subject.
EMS was immediately contacted, and life-saving measures were rendered on the subject. The subject was transported to a hospital where they were later pronounced deceased.
A firearm was recovered at the scene.

No members of law enforcement or members of the public were injured during this incident.
The involved law enforcement officer was wearing a body-worn camera during the incident, and will be placed on administrative leave, per the agency’s policy.
DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by a DCI Crime Response Specialist, Wisconsin State Patrol, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Police Department, and Winnebago County Medical Examiner’s Office.
