Greenfield nursing home set to shut down in coming weeks

GREENFIELD (WITI) -- Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Greenfield is set to close. Now, the question being asked is -- where will the residents go from here?

Kindred announced the closure on Thursday, October 3rd, saying the size and age of the facility just isn't a good fit in today's health care environment.

Kindred is required by law to submit a "relocation plan" to the Department of Health Services. Kindreds will still have to wait 120 days once that plan is approved before shutting its doors.

Kindred managers are assuring their 300 residents of a smooth transition. They're even promising to make arrangements for residents and their families to visit other facilities and cover moving expenses.

Don Carlson just retired from Kindred in August. He worked as a therapy manager since 2005. He was also employed there briefly in the 1990s, when the facility was known as Mount Carmel.

"I talked to some of my former coworkers of course - everybody is concerned but their number one job is to take care of the residents," said Carlson.

According to the DHS, two dozen federal citations were identified against Kindred within a month-long period this past summer. But Carlson says that's because Kindred is so large.

"You would expect to have more violations from a large facility than you would a 40 or 50 bed facility," said Carlson.

Family members of Kindred residents tell FOX6 News a meeting is planned for next week to discuss options.

FOX6 News reached out to Kindred for comment, but were directed to the company's news release -- which said Kindred is pledging to help workers find new jobs.
