Fog cancels Milwaukee Air & Water Show Sunday
Fog cancels Milwaukee Air & Water Show Sunday
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- There was disappointment along Milwaukee's lakefront on Sunday, June 22nd -- as the Milwaukee Air & Water Show as cancelled for a second day in a row. People waited for hours, hoping the fog along the lakefront would clear Sunday. Around 3:00 p.m., the "air" portion of the show was officially called off -- with show organizers saying the fog made it unsafe to fly.
Milwaukee Air & Water Show officials were watching the weather closely on Sunday -- hoping the show would go on.
"It`s been getting worse and worse," Michael Heiser said of the fog on Sunday.
"It's been misty and foggy," Cecilia Gordon said.
A thick, gray fog settled over beaches, sidewalks and buildings, and like the unwelcome visitor it is, it refused to leave.
"Unfortunately, we can`t control the weather or the forecast," Clint Wesel said.
The estimated 25,000 who came to watch the Air & Water Show this weekend wouldn't see any acrobatics in the sky.
The show that is advertised to go on rain or shine, had to cancel due to the poor visibility.
"It`s kind of a downer but what are you gonna do?" Donald Kernan said.
Kernan and his friends came to the lakeshore to picnic and watch the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels -- an elite flying team.
After seeing nothing but fog, there was little surprise when the event was called off for the second day in a row.
"It was actually lighter earlier. It`s just been getting thicker and thicker as we go," Kernan said.
FOX6 News is told the pilots needed three miles of visibility in order to perform -- which they didn't get on Sunday.
"Never in my life have I seen two shows go by on consecutive days. Never," Herb Hunter said.
Hunter has been the Air & Water Show's announcer for 27 years.
"There`s a lot of fog up to the north. There`s fog out to the east. We can`t see the center boat, which is required for the Blue Angels to fly on the high speed line," Hunter said.
Malachi Gordon and his mom waited hours at the North Point Custard stand, but conditions only deteriorated.
"It was very sad," Malachi Gordon said.
Event officials say it was not only unsafe to fly on Sunday, in the conditions seen along the lakefront, it would've been illegal.
Tickets are not being refunded.
As for whether this year's weather will affect plans for next year's Air & Water Show, we're told it's too soon to tell.
