Milwaukee fire: 3 homes uninhabitable near 29th and Chambers

A fire damaged three homes in Milwaukee early Saturday morning, July 4. Each home is now uninhabitable.

What we know:

According to the Milwaukee Fire Department, just before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, emergency communications got a 911 call for a report of a house fire near 29th and Chambers.

When firefighters arrived, they found a fire on all three floors towards the front of one house – and the flames were spreading to the houses on either side.

"I realized the tenants, they weren't out here. They were still in the house," said Chris Wilks, a neighbor. "I went to the side of the house and started beating on the windows, and they woke up, and they asked me what was going on, and I said, 'Your house is on fire.'"

Everyone got out of all three houses, and searches confirmed no one was left inside. The Red Cross was called to help those who were displaced. No firefighters or other people were injured.

What we don't know:

The fire is under investigation. A damage estimate is not available, but MFD said all three homes are uninhabitable.

An unconscious dog was found and treated with oxygen. The status of the dog is not known.
