Tremaine Jones trial day 1 recap

Jurors heard emotional testimony and saw body camera video as the trial began on Tuesday, March 31, for Tremaine Jones, the man accused of fatally shooting Milwaukee officer Kendall Corder.

Emotional testimony and newly released body camera video marked the first day of trial for the man accused of fatally shooting Milwaukee Police Officer Kendall Corder and wounding his partner.

What we know:

Jurors heard opening arguments Tuesday, March 31, in the trial of Tremaine Jones. Prosecutors say the shooting began as a fight between groups of women near North 25th Street and West Garfield Avenue last June.

Prosecutors allege Jones ambushed officers responding to the call, hiding in bushes before firing a rifle.

"He wanted to fight a guy who happened to be there for a girl fight, and he brings a rifle to all the moment, to where he's sitting there, hiding in the bushes and shooting two officers," said Assistant District Attorney Grant Huebner.

Investigators say video shows Jones firing into the air before officers arrived. Dash camera video played in court showed officers responding as Milwaukee officer Kendall Corder lay unconscious while officer Christopher McCray called out.

Both officers were shot. Corder died days later.

Officers Charles Worthington and James Borneman were among the first on scene and testified about what they encountered.

Testimony began Tuesday in the trial of Tremaine Jones, the man accused of killing Milwaukee Police Officer Kendall Corder and wounding Officer Christopher McCray in a shooting last summer.

"It looked like they were severely injured. Officer McCray was yelling ‘Corder, Corder, Corder.’ I pulled McCray off of Corder," said Borneman.

Prosecutors also called the lead detective to walk jurors through the crime scene. Jurors were shown McCray’s shirt with a bullet hole and Corder’s vest saturated in blood.

Prosecutors also presented evidence they say links Jones to the shooting, including a rifle recovered at the scene and a backpack containing Jones’ Social Security card. Investigators say the backpack also contained a receipt for a firearm purchased a week earlier with a matching serial number.

Defense attorneys urged jurors to look for gaps in the evidence.

"If our path is reasonable, or at least as reasonable as [the] state's path, you must find Mr. Jones not guilty," said defense attorney Abigail Ruckdashel.
