Back-to-school shopping in Milwaukee
Back-to-school shopping in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- School is back in session for some kids in Milwaukee. For others, that first day is right around the corner. That means that back to school shopping is in full swing. It's no secret that all those supplies can add up.
“This stuff is very expensive and when you have more than one child, it’s very hard to buy all the things that are on the list,” said Karen Martin with the Salvation Army.
On Wednesday, August 14th, more than 100 Milwaukee families felt a little relief in the form of an $81 gift card to Target. 120 kids paired up with Salvation Army volunteers and hit the aisles. Each had a list of required supplies depending on what grade they are entering in the Fall, but once those were all checked off they could move on to other things like school clothes and book bags.
Volunteers say what can seem like "just the basics" to some; can mean the world to the kids.
“To them it’s like a Christmas present. Wow, I can take this, I get to take that and last year I had maybe only a pencil or not even anything. I just had to show up. But this year they get to take the backpacks, school supplies and they don’t have to be embarrassed or ashamed because the other kids got stuff and they don’t. But this year they will have it,” said Martin.
The kids participating were entering kindergarten through 12th grade. This shopping spree took place at the Target on Brown Deer Road in Milwaukee.
Nearly 500 different Target stores across the country will participate in this event leading up to this coming school year.
