MILWAUKEE -- There's plenty of buzz over a slap Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett received minutes after giving his concession speech in the state's historic recall election against Gov. Scott Walker on Tuesday, June 5th.
The slap occurred after Mayor Barrett came down from the stage at Milwaukee's Hilton downtown, when he was approached by a woman in the crowd.
The woman asked the mayor, "If I slap you, will I get arrested?"
That's when Mayor Barrett leaned into the woman and was firmly slapped on the left side of his head.
Immediately after the slap, the woman said to Barrett, "Your city hasn't voted yet." She appeared to imply the mayor's concession came too early. Seconds later, the mayor moved on to greet other supporters.
"She was frustrated I think she thought that people were still voting. My understanding was that voting may have been completed. I checked on that, to make sure everyone in Milwaukee had a chance to vote, and I was told that they had, so I don't think that she knew that," Barrett said.
Milwaukee police say Barrett did not want to pursue the matter further. That means no charges will be filed against the woman. Police did take her information and then escorted her out of the building.
"I haven't been paying much attention to it. I don't know how much attention it's been getting, but again, that's life in the big city," Barrett said.
