Man accused of stealing food
GREENFIELD (WITI) -- Greenfield police have arrested a man who they say would walk into area stores, take food off the shelf, and walk out with it. In fact, he was so bold, he would steal the food and eat it right on site!
The suspect allegedly walked into three different places in Greenfield -- all on Layton Ave. He stopped at the Citgo gas station in February -- and the Speedway on March 13th twice. Police say he never made a threat and never showed a weapon.
"It appears all he steals is food," said Sgt. Ray Radakovich of the Greenfield Police Department. "Although shoplifting is illegal at no matter what the value eventually they start to add up and eventually you're going to have to go to jail over it."
Sgt. Radakovich says the suspect is no stranger to Greenfield police. In 2005, he was arrested for a similar crime.
"In Pick 'n Save literally eating raw meat out of a pounded package of ground beef walking around the store," said Sgt. Radakovich.
The suspect put apparently stolen license plates on his car to elude authorities. But during a police briefing this week, an officer heard what the suspect was doing and remembered arresting a man in 2011 for stealing food. When officers acted on that information, they spotted the man's alleged getaway car outside of his home. He was arrested immediately.
We are not naming the man in this story because he has not been formally charged. Charges are expected to come as early as Friday.
