Lack of snow in Lake Geneva

LAKE GENEVA (WITI) -- Lake Geneva is preparing for its annual Winterfest next weekend, but with the mild winter we've seen thus far, there is not much snow on the ground!

Lake Geneva is known as one of the hot spots for boating and recreation in the summer, but during the winter, the downtown area is relatively quiet.

Ice fishermen are on the lake and there is usually snow, in ample supply.

This winter, it has been a slow start for Meghan Rishlang and the rest of the Board Shop in Lake Geneva. The store specializes in selling skiing and snowboarding equipment.

"We are very dependent on the weather. Lots of snow is lots of sales. Of course you're going out and buying all the fun toys to play out in the snow," Rishlang said.

The Lake Geneva Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for its annual Winterfest, which features the country's best ice sculptors in the nation.

"It is always nice to make the area look like a winter wonderland with snow on the ground,"

Even though snow is in the forecast, this festival is not dependent on snow falling, because man-made snow is brought in.

Meanwhile, at the Board Shop, they're hoping the real stuff does fall more this winter.

"No snow is not as much fun, but at least this year's been nice and cold. Fresh snow will always be a little different from fake snow,"

The Board Shop reportedly tends to see new customers trying outdoor sports for the first time when it snows.
