Kmart store in Hartford one of 68 stores to close this summer

HARTFORD -- The Kmart store on Bell Avenue in Hartford is one of 68 Kmart stores to close this summer, Sears Holdings announced on Thursday, April 21st.

The closure includes the 68 Kmart stores and 10 Sears stores.

According to a statement from Sears Holdings, in February, the company said that it would accelerate the closing of unprofitable stores.

Thursday's announcement follows a comprehensive evaluation of the company's store portfolio that took into account historical and recent store performance, and the timing of lease expirations, company officials said in the statement.

All of the Sears stores and nearly all of the Kmart stores will close in late July 2016.

Two Kmart stores will close in mid-September 2016.

Eligible associates impacted by these store closures will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores.

The closing Kmart and Sears stores will start their liquidation sales on May 12th and April 29th, respectively.
