Locks of Love donations
GRAFTON (WITI) -- Kids helping kids. Two children in Grafton make a lengthy donation to an organization designed to help disadvantaged children suffering from medical hair loss.
Saturday morning, 11-year-old Cyle Baker-Schmidt prepared to get a major haircut, not for vanity, but for a good cause.
His mother Zina said her two children have been wanting to donate to Locks of Love for a long time, but there was a mishap with Cyle’s first attempt, when he used his hair in a school project.
"They displayed it. While they did, the hair had come off the project, fallen onto the floor and accidentally got swept up and thrown into the dumpster where we couldn’t retrieve it,” said Zina.
Cyle added, “It made me feel like I should do it again because I didn’t achieve my goal the first time.”
So for the past year, he has been growing his mane.
Zina said, “Cyle’s hair is 13 inches in length.”
And his little brother decided to join.
“Daken is 11 or 12 inches and they actually have nice good thick full hair,” said Zina.
Nine-year-old Daken said, “I’m excited. I thought it was a good cause.”
The shaggy do is somewhat of an unusual look, but the boys said they thought of the sick kids who are less fortunate, and powered through it.
“They’re really looking for people that need to give to Locks of Love and Locks of Love needs help to get them wigs for people not teasing them,” added Cyle.
Locks of Love believes the wigs can help restore self-esteem and confidence for kids battling long-term medical hair loss.
A few snips then it's bagged up and ready to go.
Zina said, “It does take 5 heads of human hair to make one wig for a cancer patient.”
For these boys, it’s a simple way to do their part in changing someone’s life. The boys said they may donate again in the future. Part of their goal was to also raise awareness and inspire other children to help kids in need.
