Kenosha woman pushes for bus service to Walmart
KENOSHA (WITI) -- Currently, Kenosha Area Transit does not provide bus service to Walmart, but one woman is making it her mission to change that.
Unable to drive temporarily due to a bad back, Mary Parker has relied on the bus in recent weeks. She has heard of people going to desperate lengths to get to Walmart because it's a one stop shop.
"I grocery shop there, I get my money order from there, I get my household supplies there," Tonya Tenner said.
Kenosha bus routes end about a mile from Walmart in the Town of Somers.
"Then all of the bags -- carrying them back to the stop is really hectic for me and the children," Tenner said.
Director of Kenosha Transit Ron Iwen says the company is willing to provide bus transportation to Walmart.
"If Somers wanted service to Walmart, we'd provide that, and they would just pay for the cost. It's based on how many times an hour you want us there," Iwen said.
Iwen says the Town of Somers isn't willing to fork over the approximately $2 per mile -- a couple hundred dollars per year.
Parker has started a Facebook group, asking Kenosha Transit to extend service to Walmart, and has asked other passengers to join her cause, even though Parker's time riding the bus is limited.
"We need to make bus lines more accessible for those people who are unable to buy a vehicle or are disabled and just can't get over there," Parker said.
Officials with the Town of Somers were unavailable for an interview, but said it would be willing to take another look at the possibility of having Kenosha bus routes run to Walmart.
