MILWAUKEE -- 3,000 freshman will move in on the UWM campus over the next week -- and school leaders want students to get connected to their new home right away.

"We have programs and events for them to meet new friends. We have lots of scheduled activities, so they can find where their classes will be, find their books," said Kelly Haag, director of University Housing.

With so much ahead, the move should be the easy part.

"I am not entirely sure what to expect, but I am excited for it," said Calli Owens, UWM Ffreshman.

Owens is about to start her next chapter in life as a film student at UWM. And she's bracing herself for changes.

"The biggest change is going to be not having my dog with me, because I love my dog more than anything in this world. She sleeps in my bed every night," said Owens.

The Owens car was packed full Tuesday, August 30th. Calli brought most of her belongings to the dorm to make her feel more at home. But mom wasn't quite ready to say goodbye.

"Oh no, no. When you asked me how I was doing, I know I wasn't thinking about that," said Stacy Owens, Calli's mom.

"Trust us, we've got this. We have a lot of experience with this. We know what we are doing, and don't let them come home yet," said Haag.

Panther Academic Welcome Day is on Friday, September 2nd, so all day there will be events focused on academic preparedness. The day will conclude with a university welcome.
